FILM ARCHIVE PROJECT UNCOVERS GOLDMINE FOR KISS FANS
Fan filmed footage of KISS performing in New Orleans, LA on December 4, 1976 during the Rock and Roll Over tour was recently shared on YouTube by a small group of die hard KISS fans who are working to preserve the 8mm film legacy of the band. This footage has been in collectors circles for nearly 3 decades, but now the actual audio of the same concert has been added, giving it new life.
"It all started years ago when we discovered KISS were indeed performing Acrobat on the Long Beach 1974 footage." says Nick Vivid, CEO of MegaPlatinum Entertainment LLC and frontman for NYC rock band FRAULEIN. "We synced audio to it and in turn helped contribute to Kissology. We're really proud of that. These silent films of KISS in the 1970's may not seem like much on the surface, but when sound is added, we sometimes uncover findings of major historical significance. Who knows how long it would have taken for someone to discover the band was performing Acrobat on that film had we not lead the charge?"
That historical significance is being uncovered in real time. Along with a small collective of die hard fans, Nick recently created the unofficial KISS 8mm Film Project in an effort to properly archive all existing 8mm films of the band, sync audio to them, and find any possible rarities in the process. So far, nearly 40 films have been uncovered, but the work doesn't end there. "There is so much misinformation about these films and we've had to hunt in strange places to find upgrades and masters - which we're still in the process of doing. We have to really do our homework to figure out what's what at
times."
Thanks to people like Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs, co-authors of the book Kiss Alive Forever, the workload has been a little easier. "Curt and Jeff did such an amazing job with that book and it's helped tremendously in our efforts to make this project as historically accurate as possible. Hopefully our research helps them, as well."
Along with the aforementioned "Acrobat" film, the collective has discovered a snippet of KISS performing "Mainline" in 1975. "We have found some interesting things while doing this project and are in the process of discovering more. Some of the rarities are on tapes that have been in fans' collections for decades. There may be a film out there of KISS performing Hard Luck Woman on the Rock n Roll Over Tour or Kissin' Time from 1974. You never know."
The collective is hoping that KISS will be interested in the project when it's done and that other groups and organizations, such as Bill Sagan and Wolfgang's Vault, will be interested in having the team work on other bands' silent films. "We've been able to really make these seem as real as possible, even if the audio isn't from the same show. We've got a very talented group here and have a proven track record of adding value to silent archival films that already exist."
The collective is also hoping other fans can help upgrade films, provide missing details, or come forth with canisters of films that may be in attics or otherwise collecting dust. Fans are encouraged to contribute to the project by contacting kiss8mm@megaplatinum.net

"Rock And Roll Over" artist works with KISS on new album cover (June 23)

"ROCK AND ROLL OVER" ARTIST WORKS WITH KISS AGAIN
In a recent interview with LetterCult, artist Michael Doret discusses his iconic KISS "Rock And Roll Over" album cover and mentions he's working with KISS on their new album cover!
Here's the KISS part of the interview:
(Question) You said you drew your inspiration (for the KISS cover) from a job for a (Japanese) magazine cover, IDEA. Where did you get your inspiration for that cover?
(Answer) The magazine was doing a feature on my work and they asked me to come up with a cover for that issue. I did the cover image to look like a shooting gallery. So the inspiration probably goes all the way back to Coney Island—but the direct inspiration was also vintage tin toys and tin litho target games. Anyway I did the IDEA cover first and the whole KISS / Rock and Roll Over thing came afterward. I loved the way the IDEA cover came out, the way I had them print it in Pantone colors—it almost felt like a silkscreen. I really wanted to go that route again. As the members of KISS were wearing Kabuki-style makeup, the Japanese-y approach I did on the IDEA cover seemed a perfect match. So I came up with that graphic and used a similar color scheme and look. We even did it in five flat colors—not in 4 color process.
(Question) (The KISS cover) was like a shooting gallery then?
(Answer) Not at all. It turned out to be more like a mandala, more Asian-influenced. I was just going for the look I had come up with on that other cover. The visual theme I chose came out of the album’s name, the “Rollover” thing. There was no “right side up” to that cover…An interesting side-note is that after all these years since I did that work for KISS, they’ve come back to me and asked me to design their next CD cover. It’s a big project, and at the moment, I’m totally immersed in it.

July 13 show at Bell Center to be broadcast on TV in Canada? (June 20)
*Kiss Live In Your Living Room. According to a 7 Jours' article, Kiss' show at Bell Center in Montreal, CA will be broadcasted live on TV. Here's what the article says in French:
The rumor is spreading and is gradually strengthening that on July 13, Kiss fans might see the legendary hard-rock band's show, live in their living room.
Nothing is yet confirmed. Or hardly ... One thing is certain, all indications are that Kiss fans won't all have to take a bath crowd to witness the legendary band's show. Some, even many, will see it live from their living room.
Contacted by phone, Pierre Marchand, Head of Archambault and Distribution Sélect Group, has not denied the rumor. Instead: "Negotiations for a partnership with the Gillett Entertainment Group to broadcast the show live on the specialized channels are indeed underway. This is the best option for the fans. In the convenience of their homes, they wouldn't have to dive into the crowd, nor turn themselves to the giant screens to see their favorite band in close-up."
The Bell Center in your living room?
Obviously, Bell Center's takeover by Quebecor would simplify things, he says. Until then, if the negotiations with the Gillett Entertainment Group are going well, the Kiss concert may not be the only one to be broadcasted on TV. He adds: "It would be part of a series of shows this partnership would allow us to distribute straightaway."

TOMMY TALKS ABOUT NEW ALBUM (Whole transcription from Guitarra Total interview thanks to KISSArmySpain)
The band is working on a song called "Rotten to the core" but it is not the old one. We are writing all new songs and there are no outsider writers. All is new. All four of us are involved. We are all really motivated and it will be the best KISS album in a long time.Psycho Circus was an album without a clear direction and vision. There’re songs on it…you start listening to and you go “what the hell is this??” It will be not the case this time.
We are currently writing songs while staying in the hotel [during the South American Alive35 leg], Gene, Paul and myself sit down with the guitars in the hotel room and write down new tunes for the album. Yes I’m going to sing on a new tune on the album and it is not titled “Shock Me”!!
It's a great tune, there is something that people missed, and that I am a good singer, I am a good vocalist. I have much experience, but I've never been a solo singer. My voice works well on that and I think people will be surprised. For what concern new possible costumes for the fall tour a decision will be taken soon, I like so much the costumes from the Rock and Roll Over era, we will see.

KISS RECORDED FIRST DEMO
On June 12th, 1973, KISS entered Electric Ladyland Studios in New York to record a demo with legendary producer Eddie Kramer, who worked with Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. The demo included "Watchin' You", "Deuce", "Black Diamond", and "Strutter" and was funded with studio time from Ron Johnsen, as payment for the $1000 owed Paul and Gene for singing backups on two of his projects, Mr. Gee Wiz and Lyn Christopher.
"Eddie Kramer, to us, epitomized the whole British sound, which was what we were looking for. He was the production king of the world" says Gene. The session was quick but the tape radiated with enough energy to light a city and pulsated like a heart about to explode. "It was full of attitude," says Paul. "Nothing compares to being vehement and vicious in what you do, and when we were recording that demo, we knew nothing could stand in our way. When the four of us were together, it was like a tank - you could fall in behind us and follow, but you couldn't get in front of us. If you did you got flattened. That "take no prisoners" attitude was right there from the beginning and no one was going to change us".

Casablanca Records book coming out in the fall (June 10)

NEW CASABLANCA RECORDS INSIDERS BOOK COMING THIS FALL
And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records, a 300+ page hardcover biography will be released this fall through Backbeat/Hal Leonard Books. This is the first time a full-length book has been published on the legendary 1970s record label and its enigmatic founder Neil Bogart. Casablanca was home to iconic hard rock acts KISS and Angel, as well as several of the decade's most visual and influential artists like Parliament, the Village People and Donna Summer.
And Party Every Day was written by Larry Harris, former Casablanca Vice President, who co-owned and co-founded the infamous record label with Bogart. Harris shares credit with co-authors Curt Gooch and Jeff Suhs, whose critically-acclaimed 2002 publication KISS Alive Forever is widely regarded as the most authoritative book ever written on the band.
With Harris's unique perspective, the world will finally gain a first-hand glimpse inside Casablanca, the record label which discovered KISS and was the living embodiment of the 1970s and the hedonistic, sex- and drug-filled Bacchanal that defined the Me Decade. The story of Casablanca Records is a thrilling three-act drama that perfectly captures the American Dream. On nothing more than a whim and the momentum of Neil Bogart's unstoppable enthusiasm, Casablanca launched in 1973. A mere five years later, Casablanca was the hottest record label in the world. In the pages of And Party Every Day, you'll walk the halls of Casablanca's Sunset Boulevard casbah, past mounds of cocaine and empty Quaalude bottles, and watch from the front row as Casablanca carefully orchestrated the record industry to its designs, successes, and ultimate demise.
In keeping with the Casablanca philosophy of "always give the fans something more," And Party Every Day will contain over 30 never-before-seen images and a heavily annotated Casablanca discography/videography section. The book will also become one of the very first publications to be promoted online featuring unreleased vintage film and video clips.
The owners of the Casablanca label, Universal Music Group, have even made available the classic Casablanca logo and artwork for the cover via a first-of-its-kind licensing deal. Several additional co-promotes with prospective major media vendors are being considered. Official And Party Every Day Twitter and Web pages will be launched in the coming weeks, along with a YouTube channel.
And Party Every Day: The Inside Story Of Casablanca Records' cover art will be released later this week when it dons the cover of the prestigious Hal Leonard Group's 2009 Fall Catalog.

Gene on the new KISS Album:
"[It's the] first studio album in 11 years. And you can't force those things — either it's in your blood and it's happening or... This is, I have to say... this might be the best new record we've done since 'Destroyer'. In fact, it has a similar sound — 'Rock And Roll Over'-meets-'Love Gun' kind of a record. That's coming out in September/October, and then we're gonna be doing a 60-city American tour."

KISS played Anchorage, Alaska on June 2, 1974 on their first tour in support of the album, KISS. The band performed with Savoy Brown at the Sundowner Drive-In Theatre. This was KISS’ only concert in Alaska until they returned over twenty five years later on January 3, 2000.
Paul recalls the visit to Alaska:
"It was surreal to get to Alaska expecting blizzards and polar bears, only to find that with heaters near our boots all over the stage, we would be playing outside! Every time we went too close to the heaters, our guitars went completely out of tune! It was cold out there!

KISS PERFORMED AT MAGIC MOUNTAIN
KISS performed a free concert at Magic Mountain Amusement Park in Valencia, California on May 19th, 1978. The concert, which took place in the parking lot of Magic Mountain, was filmed and used for the concert scenes in the movie, KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park. Tickets were distributed through a California radio station and approximately 10,000 fans attended the show. KISS performed a full regular set list and then lip-synched “Love Gun” and “Shock Me” for the movie. Between the concert and filming the extra scenes, the shoot lasted several hours and the band members interacted with the crowd through out the event.
Paul on the concert and film shoot:
"I remember it all like it was yesterday. Doing a film and a concert in a band where some were barely speaking to each other and others not speaking at all was even wierder than the script! I still can't figure out the end of the film."

ISS ALIVE III ALBUM RELEASED
KISS' Gold ALIVE III album was released May 18th, 1993. Their third live album featured a tougher sounding KISS, as Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer tore through sixteen KISS Classics, that focused mainly on material from the 80’s and 90’s . ALIVE III opens with a bang (literally) to the crunching “Creatures Of The Night” and slows down only briefly along the way for a beautiful version of “Forever”. Performances on songs like “Duece”, “Unholy”, “Detroit Rock City” and “God Gave Rock And Roll To You”, show just how tight and flexible this lineup was both vocally and musically! The album ends with a stellar version of the “Star Spangled Banner”, featuring some tasty guitar work by Mr. Kulick, which should make any American KISS Fan proud!
Alive III was produced by Eddie Kramer and KISS and was recorded in November 1992 during KISS’ REVENGE tour at The Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, Michigan, Richfield Coliseum in Cleveland, Ohio and Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Track List:
Creatures Of The Night / Deuce / I Just Wanna / Unholy / Heaven's On Fire / Watchin' You / Domino / I Was Made For Lovin' You / I Still Love You / Rock 'n' Roll All Nite / Lick It Up / Forever / Take It Off / I Love It Loud / Detroit Rock City / God Gave Rock 'n' Roll To You / Star Spangled Banner
Note: “Take It Off” only appeared on the Japanese and European versions as well as the US Vinyl release of ALIVE III
